Keeping digital documents safe
Strong password, two-step login, and a backup.
Scanned documents with your Social Security number or account details need the same protection as the paper. A few settings make a big difference.
Basics
- A unique, strong password for your storage account
- Two-step login turned on
- An encrypted folder or password-protected PDFs for the most sensitive files
- A second backup you control, like an external drive kept somewhere safe
- Don't email sensitive documents unless the connection is secure
Plan for access
Decide how a trusted person could get to your digital records if you couldn't. Many services have legacy or trusted contact settings.
