Home and property records

Keep these as long as you own the property, and a while after.

5 min read

Records of what you paid for a home, car or investment help you figure the taxable gain when you sell. That means keeping them for as long as you own the property, plus the tax record period after you sell.

Keep while you own it, plus at least 3 years after the sale is reported

  • Home purchase and closing documents
  • Receipts for home improvements (not routine repairs)
  • Records of investment purchases, reinvested dividends and cost basis
  • Vehicle title and purchase papers (title until you sell)

Keep for good

  • Your property deed (a copy is also on file with your county)
  • Mortgage payoff letter and lien release
