The yearly paperwork purge

One afternoon a year after tax season.

4 min read

Once a year, usually after you file taxes, go through your files and clear out what you no longer need.

The steps

  1. Make a new tax box for this year's return and its papers
  2. Shred supporting papers from tax years past your retention period
  3. Shred last year's monthly statements that don't support taxes
  4. Remove warranties and manuals for things you no longer own
  5. Check that insurance policies and beneficiaries are current
  6. Update your document inventory
